
This course suits students interested in the sport, fitness and recreation industry. Students will develop skills to plan and deliver a variety of gym and fitness programs to people of all ages. Learning about human anatomy, physiology, healthy eating and the provision of quality services in a sport and fitness environment.

Students who demonstrate competency in the required units may be eligible for a Statement of Attainment towards Certificate III in Fitness SIS30315.
SBAT students who demonstrate competency in the required units may be eligible for a Certificate III in Fitness SIS30315.
Course Duration/Hours
This is a 240 hour course that runs over 2 years. SBAT students may undertake the 360 hour course.
HSC INFORMATION
Fitness HSC VET courses count as Board Endorsed unit credit for the HSC but do not contribute towards an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
For a course to count towards the HSC program of study, students must satisfy the course completion criteria as required by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). Refer to the Assessment Certification Examination (ACE) website. There must be sufficient evidence that the student has:
- followed the course developed or endorsed by NESA
- applied themselves with diligence and sustained effort to the set tasks and experiences provided in the course
- achieved some or all of the course outcomes
- (where applicable) undertaken the mandatory work placement.
Work Placement
NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requires students to complete a minimum of 30 hours of work placement. Work placement is a mandatory component of the course.
Days worked as part of a School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship satisfies this NESA requirement.
Costs
A course fee is generally charged by schools to cover consumable materials. Your school will provide further advice.
Assessment
This course is competency based and the student’s performance is recognised against a prescribed industry standard. Assessment strategies may include:
- Observation
- Student demonstration
- Questioning
- Written tasks
- Tests
Students are given a number of opportunities to demonstrate competence across the range of competency standards covered by this course.
Recognition of Prior Learning
You may be entitled to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning. If you have completed any training, either through your part-time work, TAFE or other school VET courses you have completed recently, or through experience gained in other ways you can apply for RPL. You should talk to your School VET Leader of Learning/Coordinator, Careers Adviser or course teacher for further information.

Duties and Tasks
Fitness trainers and instructors typically do the following:
- Instruct and demonstrate exercises to minimise injury and improve fitness
- Provide healthy eating information including nutrition, weight control, and lifestyle issues
- Prepare fitness programs and workouts for clients with different levels of fitness and skill
- Monitor clients’ progress and adapt programs as required
- Explain and enforce safety rules and regulations on sports, recreational activities, and the use of exercise equipment
- Maintain equipment and facilities Provide emergency first aid if required
